I was in my late 30s when I looked at myself in the mirror and didn’t like what I saw. My youngest was 18 months old and I was just coming out of that “baby haze” and knew that I couldn’t tell myself “it’s just baby fat” anymore.
I had seen an 8 week fat loss challenge being advertised and thought that it would be just the thing, and so I made the decision and joined up. I was horrified after the initial weigh-in – I was heavier than I had ever been, with a body fat percentage of 30% (one third of my body was fat!).
With guidance and support, I set myself realistic and attainable goals for the challenge – with one of them being just to make sure that I made time to exercise four times a week. With 2 young children, my life was already full, and this in itself was a huge challenge for me.
The remainder of the time I did weights at home on a swiss ball, and made my exercise routines interesting and varied by going for walks and runs at some of the awesome locations that were all around me – the Waitakere/Muriwai bush trails with beautiful waterfalls along the way, the amazing Bethells sand-dunes and the views from the cliffs at Maori Bay – I almost forgot how hard I was actually working out!
Keeping a diary of my food intake was an eye opener. You can conveniently “forget” about those little treats here and there, but when they’re down on paper you notice how they add up! I also read lots of books on nutrition and metabolism and made changes to the family diet – they were small changes, but I noticed big results.
But I was full of resolve and determination and I made sure that I scheduled in one hour 4 times a week just for exercise – my “me” time.
I did the 8 week challenge without joining the gym. I went to a bootcamp once a week and I attended the four group workouts as part of the challenge. I started really looking forward to the workouts and enjoyed the bootcamps more than I had anticipated.
Although I didn’t win the challenge, I achieved the goals I had set for myself, and that gave me an enormous feeling of empowerment.
But what I noticed more than anything else, were the amazing improvements in my mental and physical health and in my self confidence. I was hooked!
So hooked that I wanted to share the experience with other women and inspire them to find their way to a happier and healthier lifestyle. So I made the next big decision – I became a qualified personal trainer.
I am passionate about what I do and get a thrill out of watching other women transform their bodies and take control of their lives. It’s what drives me.
